A Short Journey to Phillip Island

A visitor from the States and a free weekend meant a trip to Phillip Island, about 90 minutes south of Melbourne. Best known for its "Penguin Parade" of 13 inch birds (cue the nature video), we found the most remarkable feature of the Island to be Cape Woolami.

The peninsula juts into the Bass Strait from the Island's southeast corner. Low scrub brush covers the sanddunes, holding tight against the heavy winds.

Woolami is known among Australians as an excellent surf beach. We didn't bring our boards this visit but were impressed by the waves breaking along the shore. At the end of the Cape, you can see impressive rock formations called The Pinnacles. The rocks meet the waves in front of high basalt cliffs.

It wouldn't be a good surf beach without a heavy wind!

Anyone for a long walk on the beach?

An Erika sandwich!

Just down the shore from the Cape itself, were the Forrest Caves. Caverns cut into the rock by the ocean, they can be walked on and explored at low tide.

Be careful though, one big wave can splash up on top!

The grottoes in the cliffs opposite are not  home to sea monsters.
