Our New 'Hood: South Melbourne

Welcome! Tucked in between the CBD, Port Phillip, and Albert Park, South Melbourne is an mix of quiet neighbourhood and bustling part of the city.

Founded as Emerald Hill in 1855, the town was re-named South Melbourne in 1883 just a few years after the Town Hall was built.

The area has risen and fallen in popularity in the intervening years - most recently riding a wave of gentrification in the 1980s. The primary shopping strip and thoroughfare is Clarendon Street which a good place to see the verandahs common to Australian architecture.

The small streets and laneways of the neighborhood are home to many classically styled Victorian homes. Just like the shopfronts, the Victorians are often decorated with cast iron 'filigree' as well as decorative parapets.

It is easy to get lost amidst these gems, each with its own character.

Even the streets draw you in. Some invite you to amble...

...others to investigate.

And if you get too far south, you end up in beautiful Albert Park. A lovely place for a picnic or a ride around the lake.

While we feel very welcome in the neighbourhood, nearly every lot has a fence. Low or high, they serve as a boundary. And a decorative accessory.

Blue and cream.

A splash of red, for autumn.

Sparse, ordered.

In all, our 'hood has a little bit of everything - interesting architecture, a creative spirit, and something new around every corner.

A bit of old and a bit of new.

That's what we love about South Melbourne!
