Yesterday, we had the pleasure of spending a lovely Sunday on a farm tour in the countryside.
The Murray Family moved into the mountains in 2006 with a goal of growing
their own food and having a wonderful place to raise their kids. They're nearly self-sufficient
and have accomplished quite a bit else along the way.
First step - a solid veggie garden, near the house for easy access.
Cold winters mean plants need a bit more protection, which (naturally) led to a 60ft long polytunnel.
Coupled with some fruit trees and a few chickens and the family has gone
a long way toward feeding themselves.
Why stop there?
Let's add 40 or 50 Dorper sheep to the mix to balance the diet and have some to sell at market.
Well maybe there are more than a few chickens around.
Son Josh (age 12) has started an egg enterprise, now with about 800 layers. These hens are the stars for now...but those chicks are among some 1000 more bouncing around.
And these girls go wild for some sprouted barley.

Thanks ladies!
No farm would be complete without a good dog.
Joey here is a Maremmano - a livestock dog from mountainous Abruzzo in Italy.
Just like Willy Wonka, all the eggs have to be checked.
This nifty machine is from the 1950s and works like a charm, weighing and sorting.
Thanks for joining us on our autumn adventure!
If you're in the area, have a look at Seven Hills Organic Farm.
