Feeling like we needed a breath of fresh air and some peace,
we jumped on the train and headed out of the city to Dandenong Ranges National Park.
Our train stop was Upper Ferntree Gully,
which dropped us off right at the southwest corner of the park.
The park is home to the famous Thousand Steps trail,
an incredibly steep path of 700 stairs over 1 1/2 miles.
For those of us who are familiar with The Incline in Manitou Springs, Colorado, climbing the Thousand Steps trail feels like home. Apparently over 82% of park visitors come not to enjoy the scenery or breath the fresh air, but to sweat it out on these steps and other trails throughout the park.
The trail winds up a valley that is covered with beautiful, sprawling ferns.
One Tree Hill graces the top of the Thousand Steps trail.

A side trail down gives you a little break from steepness of the Thousand Steps.

Lost? Nah. There's really only one way to go.
But feigning confusion on the trail allows for a quick rest and water break.
Of course, we couldn't help ourselves when this fish & chips joint beckoned from across the way.
Always worth the wait for some fried goodies.
